The Last Quarter
The loosening of lockdown over the past 3 months has undoubtedly had a positive impact for us on a personal level. It has also had an impact on our working lives too. With more people coming back to the office for one or two days a week to enjoy a change of scenery and interaction with colleagues, there has been a slight reduction in the relentless nature of work. That said, the increase in legal work, coupled with a shortage of lawyers means most fee-earners are still working above capacity.
Hot Practice Areas
The instructions that we’ve received this quarter is now above pre-pandemic levels with numbers 10% above those received in the same quarter in 2019. This is being driven by a combination of growth and replacement hires.
Activity is high across the board for most practice areas and types of firms.
Candidates are as open to moves as they have ever been and are fully aware that there are multiple options available should they want a change. The ability to conduct interviews from the comfort of your own home is one reason why recruitment is so busy. Another is that having spent 15 months away from the office, the social ties and culture that are so important for retention are not as strong as they were. Aside from this, they key reasons for changing job are:
- Work / life balance and the support and measures in place to avoid burnout
- Salary / bonus
