There is currently a desperate shortage of interim company secretaries which poses a real problem for secretariats that require maternity or sick-leave cover, project assistance, or additional resource during a busy time.
With demand at an all-time high, employers need to be more flexible and accelerate the recruitment process to secure the best interim talent at competitive rates.
Remote working has made it possible for individuals to work part time in the office and flexibly from home. This opens two largely untapped but hugely valuable demographics of the company secretarial workforce.
Many ICSA Members close to or at retirement are looking to continue working by means of contract work or part time opportunities. Companies should not be concerned about hiring someone senior into a mid-level role. Most retirees we speak to are keen to provide support at a less senior level with the offer of higher level input as and when required.
Many say money is not the main driver and are happy to work at a salary level commensurate with the job on offer. Employers can therefore utilise a great deal of knowledge and experience at rates that do not break the budget.
There is also a good supply of ICSA Members looking to return to work after an extended career break to raise a family or after a long term sick leave. Employers tell us they worry about knowledge gaps and the additional pressure this places on management. However in reality good company secretaries keep themselves up to date with changes in the profession and get up to speed quickly and efficiently.
Many request work part time to accommodate the school run and various other commitments. Part time company secretaries work incredibly efficiently, plan further ahead, are contactable outside their core hours and will routinely log in outside office hours to complete tasks. Employers that routinely employ part time workers tell us they make the arrangement work by adopting a more flexible approach.
The ICSA support us in our efforts to help all ICSA Members find work. We need to better mobilise the collective resource of retirees and returners if we are to address the current interim company secretarial skills shortage.
